10 days desert Tour from Marrakech. First, we head west to see the coastal resort Essaouira. We will pick you up at your hotel in an air-conditioned private vehicle. It is a scenic three-hour drive to the port city of Essaouira. We start our exploration of the ancient town of Medina. Surrounded by powerful ramparts and crashing waves, the medina offers an incredible experience for visitors. Walking the streets feels like being in the ancient world. Essaouira is a popular destination for seafood enthusiasts. The town has many places serving fresh seafood, and that’s what we will have for lunch. In the afternoon we will visit other popular attractions, including Sqala, Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah Museum, the old Jewish Quarter or mellah, and the port. Later, we will take strolls on the beach in the beautiful glow of the sunset. Our guide will then take you back to your accommodations for the night.
Day 2: Essaouira – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate
After breakfast in Essaouira, we will pick you up at your riad or hotel and set off in the direction of Ait Benhaddou. The drive to the village of Ait Benhaddou offers scenic vistas of the High Atlas Mountains. We will make several stops along the way to take pictures of these snowcapped peaks and the Tizi n’Tichka pass. At Ait Benhaddou, we will first visit the Kasbah, the most popular one in Morocco. The fortified village of earthen clay structures is one of the most impressive historic landmarks in Morocco. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Roaming its trodden passages feels like walking in the ancient world. In the afternoon we will take another scenic journey toward Ouarzazate. This is where the desert part of our tour begins. We first make a stop at the Atlas Film Studios before heading downtown to explore Kasbahs of Tifoultoute and Taourirt. We will then finish with a tour of the town’s main square. In the evening we will drop you off at your accommodations.
Day 3: Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga
After breakfast, we will continue on our desert tour. This time we’re headed to Todra Gorge. The road we take is very scenic and it passes through several small towns such as Kalaat M’Gouna, Boumalne, and Tinghir. Todra Gorge is stunning with its massive canyons of about 1,300 feet (400 m) deep. We will walk around the valley and visit major oases found alongside it. You will have fun hiking the Todra River gorge as well as taking in the magnificent scenery all around. After Todra Gorge, we travel to the oasis town of Erfoud, which is popular for the rich fossil deposits found in the area. We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before going to a craft workshop to see how exactly the fossils get extracted from bedrock. Later on in the afternoon, we will drive towards Merzouga. There, you are in for one of the best desert camel rides in Morocco, about an hour-and-thirty-minute ride to Berber camp. You will be climbing Erg Chebbi’s giant dunes on the way to the camp. In the evening you’ll get to take in the beautiful sunset over the dunes and spend the night at a Berber nomad camp, where they will serve you traditional food. For entertainment, there will be Berber music with dancing around the campfire.
Day 4: Exploring Merzouga / Erg Chebbi Desert
We will wake up early in the morning to experience the magical view of sunrise on top of the dunes in the Merzouga desert. Set the alarm to ensure that you don’t miss the sight of a desert sunrise. After this, you will get to take another camel ride back to Merzouga. We will pass through some local villages on the way. At Merzouga, our driver will be waiting to take you on a drive deeper into the desert. We will freshen up and an air-conditioned 4×4 off-road vehicle is ours to head on an exciting desert ride. The places we will visit are Hassilabied Khamlia and several other villages. If we’re lucky we get to meet nomads living in camps. You will also have an opportunity to enjoy live Gnawa music. The off-road trip will head deeper into the desert to see nearby oases. In the afternoon, we will visit the souks and bazaars of Rissani. Day 5: Merzouga – Midelt
Our Moroccan Experience Tour continues. On the day’s itinerary is the town of Midelt. We will stop at popular places as we go, for example at Aoufous, Errachidia, and Er-Rich. The Ziz Valley is another must-see attraction on our way. You will have the opportunity for photographing and admiring the beautiful landscape and Berber villages. The oasis of Aoufous is a memorable place to check out. The panoramic view of the oasis from up high is one of the reasons it is so popular with travelers. By the afternoon we will have reached Midelt. For the remaining part of the day, we will be exploring the city. Some of the key attractions we will visit include Aguelmous, Eglise de Midelt, Notre Dame de l’Atlas monastery, and the spectacular Gorges d’Aouli. We will also have time to check in on some nearby villages and interact with the local tribes. In the evening as the sun goes down on Midelt we will head back to our accommodations for the night.
Day 6: Midelt – Fes
Our destination for the day is the city of Fes. The route to get there passes through several picturesque places, including towns like Zaida and Timahdte, and the cedar forest near Azrou. This forest has become known for its friendly Barbary macaque monkeys. So, we will stop longer at Azrou for you to enjoy picking forest fruits and berries and play with the amiable animals. From here we will take a spectacular drive to the extraordinary city of Ifrane. It is also referred to as Moroccan Switzerland because of its clean environment. The current city was established in 1928 by the French, although the first permanent settlement of the area dates to the 16th century. That first community was 4 miles (7 km) from present Ifrane and was made up of cave dwellings. Only in the last decades have people built houses above ground. So, Ifrane is a contemporary city, which looks like belonging more to a European continent than Africa. You will feel the striking contrast in architecture right away. A visit to Ifrane is never complete without seeing the stone lion monument, a park sculpture of a lion dating from around 1936. In the evening, we will continue with our drive to Fes. Upon arrival, we will take a walk in the medieval town and enjoy a bit of nightlife before retiring to the hotel for the night.
Day 7: Fes – Chefchaouen
We’ll have the whole day for exploring Fes. The city was founded in 789, and it is the 2nd largest city in Morocco. There are historical features to see as well as contemporary attractions. Our first sites will be the two medina quarters with their centuries-old streets and atmosphere. Fes el-Bali is the largest intact medina in the world. From here you get to see a breathtaking sight of the minaret of the famous Medersa Bou Inania. We will go ahead and visit Medersa el-Attarine before lunch. In the afternoon we will tour more sites, including the medieval Quaraouiyine Mosque built in 857. We will then visit the old mellah (Jewish Quarter) in Fes el-Jedid as well as the site of the Royal Palace right next to it. Other popular places for sightseeing include Bab Bou Jeloud, Chouara Tannery, Ibn Danan synagogue, Bou Jeloud Gardens, and Ville Nouvelle. We will drive out to our next destination in the evening. The beautiful mountainous landscape welcomes us as we drive toward Chefchaouen. We will drop you off at your accommodations for the night.
Day 8: Exploring Chefchaouen, the ‘Blue Pearl’
Waking up to find yourself in the beautiful Chefchaouen is a magical feeling. We’ll enjoy breakfast and then start exploring the blue city. Chefchaouen is a historical place that has a lot to offer. Our tour includes visiting major attractions, including the old town. We will begin with the historic Medina, also known as the blue town. We will take leisurely walks on the streets to appreciate the unique surroundings of blue-washed houses. It is a perfect background for amazing photographs to show your friends and family at home. If you’re a cat person, be prepared for seeing a lot of these furry friends around, as they are known to roam the streets on their own. We won’t forget to pay a visit to the main souks as well. The next site is Plaza Outa el-Hamman, lined with restaurants and cafés serving the best local cuisine. We will have lunch here. In the afternoon, we will visit more interesting places, including the Kasbah Museum, the Grand Mosque, Ras el-Ma, souks, and bazaars. Toward the end of the day, we will go on a trek up the hill to the white Spanish Mosque, to see a splendid sunset over the Rif Mountains. Our tour guide will take you back to your accommodations for the night.
Day 9: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Rabat
After breakfast, we will drive out from Chefchaouen to go to Volubilis via the Rif Mountains. It’s a 3-hour drive that offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountainous landscape. We will spend the entire morning exploring the well-preserved Roman ruins, architecture, mosaics, art, and other ancient features at the archaeological site. The excavated town, dating from the 3rd century BCE, Volubilis has a lot of fascinating things to teach about the history of the Roman Empire. History buffs will be sure to love this site, and it has something exciting to offer to everyone. It is one of the most striking sites on your way to Meknes. When everything has been seen at Volubilis, we will take an exciting road trip to Meknes, one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. Among key attractions in this city is the bustling medina of locals dotted with various restaurants and cafés. We will have something out of the local cuisine for lunch. Afterward, we will go exploring the small town, including its centuries-old ruins. We will also visit Meknes’ vibrant souks. In the evening another road trip awaits, driving to the capital of Morocco, Rabat. We will drop you off at your riad or hotel there.
Day 10: Rabat – Casablanca
Breakfast in the morning, and then our driver will pick you up at your accommodations and we will head out on a tour of Rabat. Being one of the imperial cities, Rabat has a rich heritage. The city offers a beautiful mix of modern and historical qualities. Founded in the 12th century, the city is a gem to discover. We will start with a visit to the Udayas Kasbah, home of the oldest mosque in Rabat. We get to walk the trodden streets of the medieval medina and the nearby attractions. We’ll make it to the ancient settlement of Chellah before lunchtime. Afterward, we’ll sightsee the iconic Hassan Tower and the remnants of what was once going to be the world’s largest mosque.
