Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley [324 km]

From there, your driver-guide takes you up into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest paved road in Morocco. It’s a dramatic drive, and we build in several stops along the switchbacks so you can take in the panoramic views, photograph the mountain villages below, and stretch your legs before continuing. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Merzouga, the small town that serves as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. You’ll arrive at your desert camp just as the dunes turn gold and orange, with dinner served under the stars and an evening of traditional Berber drumming and music around the fire.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert Tour

Most guests wake up early on this day to catch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, a moment that’s genuinely worth setting an alarm for. After breakfast at the camp, we spend the morning exploring the wider Merzouga area, including a stop at a scenic viewpoint that offers one of the best panoramic views of the dune field.

From there, we head to Khamlia village, home to a community known for its Gnawa music tradition a rhythmic, spiritual musical style with roots in West African heritage. It’s a chance to hear live music and learn a bit about a culture that isn’t always visible from the main tourist routes. After lunch, you’ll have free time to relax, swim if your accommodation has a pool, or simply enjoy the desert surroundings before heading to your hotel near the dunes for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Merzouga Desert – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Midelt [264 km]

Leaving the Sahara behind, day four takes you north toward Midelt. Your first stop is Rissani, a historic trading town that once marked the end of caravan routes coming from Mali and Sudan. Its market retains much of its traditional character, and if timing allows, it’s worth a short walk through.

From Rissani, the route continues to Erfoud, a town known for fossil extraction and marble workshops, where ancient sea fossils are cut and polished into local crafts. The drive then follows the Ziz Valley, a long, green corridor of palm groves flanked by dramatic cliffs one of the most photogenic stretches of the entire journey.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Midelt, a quiet town set between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountain ranges. You’ll spend the night at a hotel here, surrounded by peaceful mountain scenery, a welcome contrast to the desert landscapes of the previous two days.

Day 5: Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Meknes – Fes [270 km]
