Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Dades Valley [332 km]

We set off towards the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest road pass in Morocco. This canyon, famous among rock climbers, is also home to Berber nomads and ancient mud-brick villages. Take a short walk along the river, where you might see locals herding goats along the lush valley.

Continuing south, we pass through Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and date palms. Here, you can visit local workshops showcasing prehistoric marine fossils dating back millions of years.

By afternoon, we arrive at Merzouga, the gateway to the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, which reach heights of up to 350 meters. Here, you will experience the most iconic part of your desert adventure – a camel trek across the golden dunes. As the sun begins to set, watch the desert transform into a mesmerizing sea of colors.

Our first stop is Rissani, a historic desert town and former capital of the Alaouite dynasty. Explore its bustling souk, where merchants sell spices, handmade crafts, and the famous Madfouna (Berber pizza). This town remains a vital trading center, where nomads come to barter for goods.

From Rissani, we journey through the Draa Valley, Morocco longest oasis, stretching over 1,100 kilometers and lined with date palms, kasbahs, and ancient caravan routes. This valley has played a crucial role in Saharan trade for centuries and is home to prehistoric rock carvings and ancient Berber traditions.

We then drive through the Anti-Atlas Mountains, a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks and deep gorges, before arriving in Ouarzazate. Our main stop is at the Kasbah Telouet, a fascinating yet lesser-known kasbah that once belonged to the powerful Glaoui clan. Though partially in ruins, its intricately decorated rooms and historical significance make it a must-visit.
